The Hook at Port San Luis Sportlaunch
"What You Need for Fishing Trips near Avila Beach”
While Morro Bay gets a lot of the spotlight, seasoned Central Coast anglers know that Avila Beach (and specifically Port San Luis) offers some of the most accessible and productive fishing in the region. The bay is naturally protected from the prevailing northwest winds by Point San Luis, making it a haven for small boaters and kayak anglers.
If you’re planning a DIY trip out of Avila, here is your essential checklist for a successful day on the water.
1. The Launch: Port San Luis SportLaunch
The Port San Luis SportLaunch is one of the most unique boat launching experiences in California. Instead of a traditional ramp, they use a massive gantry crane to hoist your boat directly into the water.
Location: 3950 Avila Beach Drive, at the end of the road past Olde Port Beach.
The Process: Port San Luis Sportlaunch is located in Avila Beach, CA. We have a gantry crane and a drive-thru trailer boat launch facility. Our launch crew will slide the straps between your trailer and your boat and put your boat at the launch dock. If you launch here often, we can modify your trailer to make the launch easier on your boat and the trailer by adding slots for our straps to slide through. It’s fast, efficient, and saves your trailer from the wear and tear of salt-water submersion.
Hours: Typically open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (weather permitting).
Pro Tip: Make sure your boat is between 15 and 28 feet and that you don't have a mast stepped—the drive-thru has height restrictions!
2. Gear Up: Stop by "The Hook" for Stoopid Baits
Before you head down the pier to launch, you need to make a pit stop at The Hook. Located right on the waterfront at Port San Luis, this is the premier tackle shop for Avila locals.
While they carry all the essentials, there is one specific reason to visit: Stoopid Baits. The Hook is a proud local carrier of our custom tube baits, including some exclusive colors you won't find anywhere else, like the All White!
Why Stoopid Baits? The reefs around Avila are snaggy and complex. Our tubes are designed to bounce off structure while providing a massive profile that attracts hungry Lingcod and oversized Vermilion Rockfish.
The "Avila Special": Ask the staff at The Hook which "Stoopid Bait" or "Stoopid Bolt" is currently hitting. They see the fish coming off the boats every afternoon and know exactly which colors are working in the current visibility.
3. Where to Point Your Bow
Once you're splashed and out of the 5 mph mooring zone, you have two great options:
The Breakwater: Just a short run from the launch, the Port San Luis breakwater holds a massive amount of life. It’s a great spot for Calico Bass and smaller Rockfish.
Point Buchon & Beyond: If the swell is down, heading north toward the Point Buchon area offers deeper reefs where the Stoopid Baits really shine. Look for depth changes between 150 and 250 feet.
4. Essential Checklist
California Fishing License: Required for anyone over 16 (unless you are fishing strictly from the Harford Pier).
Safety Gear: Ensure your VHF radio is working. The fog can roll into Avila quickly, and you’ll want to be able to communicate with the Harbor Patrol if visibility drops.
The Right Plastics: A 1/2oz to 6oz Stoopid Bait or 8oz to 10oz Stoopid Bolt is the gold standard for this area.
Support Local, Fish Better
Support the shops that support the local fishing community. Grab a coffee, chat with the crew at the SportLaunch, and load up on Stoopid Baits at The Hook before you hit the kelp lines.
